Soccer is a collision sport. There are some risks any time bodies collide at full speed going after one ball. There are risks every time a ball is kicked. It may hit us somewhere that may hurt. These risks are inherent every time we step on the field. As a referee I cannot prevent these collisions but the laws of the game (LOTG) give me instructions on what needs to be enforced and sanctioned.
This season our team has had a few impacts between the ball and our heads. While these are part of the game understanding brain trauma is anything but ordinary. The science of brain injury and recovery is relatively new.
Thanks to Nick Saban, the Pittsburgh Steelers and UPMC a lot of this research is happening in Pittsburgh. Micky Collins Ph.D had a recent interview with Peter Attia.
Did you know there is actually approved headgear for soccer? Did you know that this headgear has been reviewed by Virginia Tech? Did you know a team in Gibraltar mandated their players wear headgear?
