Every night during high school season in the commonwealth I’m a member of that game’s referee team. I typically also have 2-3 young referees on the field playing the game who I have worked with in the past year. When I work with young referees I always ask them to use their player brains as well as the laws of the game to guide them on the pitch. Why do I stress their player brain? Because players know when somebody does high level fouling tactics or dissents against the spirit of the game. The Laws of the Game are very black and white and great for referencing, but the category Unsporting Behavior is very grey. You might be doing your job correctly when a schools principal requests you not be assigned any of their games, because you understand the grey.
You might be handling dissent correctly if the coach knows they can’t cross the line.
